OPEN THURSDAY
June 23rd is OPEN THURSDAY. 5pm to 9pm. Free Exhibitions. Free Workshops. Free Music. Late Night Shopping.
New for 2022, OPEN THURSDAY is a pilot project by CVAN – Contemporary Visual Arts Network England. Following the successful launch of their quarterly Art Maps (a free map of Tyneside arts venues listing upcoming exhibitions and events), CVAN are organising a city-wide open event known as OPEN THURSDAY, wherein cultural and arts venues throughout Newcastle and Gateshead open their doors to the public throughout the day and evening.

The Newcastle Arts Centre will be open all day, as usual, but from 5 til 9pm, the building will truly come alive! Our venues and shops will be open late, with both Visual Art and Music events taking place throughout the evening.
Two exceptional exhibitions and a collage workshop will be open to all, and our Art Materials Shop has some very special offers for one day only. Save an Extra 25% off our normal competitive prices on drawing supplies – Pencils, Pens and Sketchbooks in celebration of our latest exhibition!

Take a look at our current exhibition, Liz Atkin: Drawings, Collage and Writing – A Retrospective. This exhibition showcases the eclectic practice of the late Liz Atkin (1951 – 2018), collecting her large-scale drawings, collages and writing alongside personal artefacts belonging to the artist. Curated by Jed Buttress and compiled from national and international private collections, this exhibition demonstrates Atkin’s outstanding vision and technical skill.

–
To celebrate the life and work of Liz Atkin, Details Art Materials are hosting an evening of workshops as part of Open Thursday. After viewing Liz’s retrospective exhibition in our Gallery space, you’re invited to create your own characters in collage, pencil, and poetry, by diving through our vast collection of postcards, photographs and found objects for inspiration.

Pay a visit to our experimental gallery space and see Our Lives, Ephemera, a fantastic group show exhibiting the collage work of six artists whose visual arts practice has been uncovered through their activity within the no-audience underground.

Live Music for the evening starts at 6pm with a free concert by brand new accordion and percussion duo talented Amy Thatcher & Fran Knowles in the Black Swan Bar. The Jazz programme kicks off on Thursday 23rd June with the Stu Collingwood Organ Trio, featuring Stu Collingwood on organ, Abbie Finn on drums and Harry Keeble on saxophone. Stu’s versatility and skill as a jazz pianist and organist has seen him perform across the UK with the likes of sax player Snake Davis and the Pasadena Roof Orchestra. At this gig he’ll be singing some swing and playing bass pedals too. Look forward to tunes ranging from modern swing to Latin, funk and some originals, with musical influences such as Jimmy Smith and Joey DeFrancesco, Keith Emerson and Dr Lonnie Smith.

IN OTHER NEWS…
The Creative Cultural Quarter
It good news that North of Tyne Combined Authority and Mayor Jamie Driscoll are committed to improving the Creative sector and that work has started on a Creative Cultural Quarter for our part of the City. We understand that this will be focussed on the ‘Clayton Street Corridor’ which links the Life Centre west of the Central Station with Eldon Square. This route was the last work of Richard Grainger who lived at 36 Clayton Street West, and was named after John Clayton – the man most responsible as Town Clerk for the development of our Georgian and Victorian City.
Our Ambition is to support this project and encourage work towards the following much needed outcomes :-
- A Family friendly City
- Professional studio resources
- More Video and TV production supported by centres of craft and online production skills
- A tourist information office
So far the working group is yet to appoint a Project Manager of the £1.7 million 5 year budget and there is little information available about Newcastle City’s ambition for this initiative. However we welcome any commitment to promote and recognise the work of local arts projects.
