An Evening with The Chet Set: the Music of Chet Baker celebrates the life and music of Chet Baker from Hollywood pinup to heroin addict. The eponymous trumpet player and vocalist’s career saw him paired with artists as diverse as Charlie Parker and Elvis Costello before his untimely end on an Amsterdam pavement.

American trumpet player and vocalist Pete Tanton performs highlights from the Chet Baker catalogue as well as some lesser-known gems for an engaging evening of stories and songs. He is joined by The Chet Set, an ensemble of internationally acclaimed musicians, to present an authentic American reading of the West Coast sound and the enigma of Chet Baker.

Joining Pete will be some North East jazz powerhouses; bassist Mick Shoulder, pianist Alan Law and drummer John Bradford

Ranging from American Songbook greats to pop hits, this trio moves fluidly between moods to create a smooth night of jazz for you to enjoy with your favourite tipple.

Our live music this Tuesday comes from local quartet Eva Fox & the Sound Hounds. Jazz vocalist Eva Fox is joined by seasoned musicians on the local jazz scene: the multi-tasking, musical stylings of Jude Murphy on bass, organ and piano aficionado Steve Chambers and all-rounder drummer Sid White.

New to the Sound Hounds, we welcome guitarist Steve Glendinning. Steve has had a successful career as a recording artist, session player and educator, performing globall, and specialises in jazz, flamenco and world musics, including South American and Afro-Cuban styles.

The Sound Hounds, whilst keeping their style close to the swinging rhythms of the Great American Songbook era, have taken inspiration from the modern stylings of jazz vocalists Diana Krall, Melody Gardot & Madeleine Peyroux.

The Simon Taylor Band – Thursday 29th October

The Simon Taylor Band perform Latin and jazz ballad originals with influences ranging from Antonio Carlos Jobim to Melody Gardot. Simon’s music resides in the British Library Sound Archive after they asked him to send over his back catalogue in 2022 and a song of his reached the Semi-Finals of the 2021 UK Songwriting Contest.

Escapist and romantic, Simon’s tunes carry wisps of bossa nova and flamenco rumba while his lyrics draw inspiration from his travels around Europe soaking up the good (and bad) times. Taking in vistas from Paris, Barcelona, Cadiz and beyond, Simon’s music hopes to impart a little sunlight on the darkest of Northern nights

Presenting a hot new collaboration between the region’s top musicians. Northern Reaches is an improvisational journey into the legends and history of the wild border regions between Scotland and England. Incorporating electronic effects, break beats and pulsating riffs, Laurence Blackadder (bass), Joe Steels (guitar), John Hirst (drums) and Pete Tanton (trumpet), paint a harmonic landscape where rhythm is key to unlocking ghosts of the past in this premier performance.

Papa G’s Troves had been delighting audiences for years with their mix of lively, electic and crowd-pleasing funk and jazz. With great audience interaction and some quirky instruments, the Troves always offered a one-of-a-kind live experience, and always thoroughly recommended.

After a hiatus of a few years, Papa G and his trusty Troves are back for a reunion gig here at The Black Swan, so make sure you’re here for it!

Every inch the blues man, Howlin’ Mat has played the world over, with gigs in Norway, Morocco, Germany, Holland, Belgium and Poland. A nationally acclaimed slide guitarist and cites Elmore James, R.L. Burnside and Mississippi Fred McDowell amongst his major influences.

No Howlin‘ Mat show would be complete without his trademark cigar box guitar.

Howlin‘ Mat is also a skilled storyteller intertwining tales of life on the road with his music to create an intimate and unique experience for each audience.
