Maja Hajtanian Śliwińska is a disabled linguist turned artist working within the English basketweaving tradition. Her path into Fine Art has wound through language revitalisation, research, and law – always guided by a commitment to listening to human stories and honouring the layered meanings held in people and places. Before studying Fine Art in Newcastle, Maja ran weaving workshops in London, where participants from Eastern Europe, the Caribbean, lreland, Indonesia, India, and beyond shared techniques, memories and cultural parallels. These encounters revealed how deeply weaving resonates across multiethnic communities, becoming a bridge between people and a way of honouring lineage while forming new communal narratives.

Maja sees willow not just as a material but as a carrier of human culture – shaped by necessity, labour, and place, holding centuries of local knowledge and lived experience. Her practice grows from this understanding.

Fluid Forms in Woven Space embraces whimsy and possibility: fish drift through imagined currents as the artist imagines new currents for herself, weaving joy, playfulness, and imagined futures into a single installation.
