Saturday 20th May 2023 – One Night Only!

AT NEWCASTLE ARTS CENTRE

After Leonardo

Leonardo Da Vinci was famous as a brilliant artist and inventor. Can we continue making creative inventions? The Newcastle Arts Centre team create a workshop and gallery of drawing and optical machines for you to explore. This will include a floor size pendulum Spirograph, making animations for a Zoetrope, how artists used cameras before the invention of photography and a radio controlled pen!  Visitors can work them, draw them, and get advice on making your own. We have also invited the very creative Marc Parrett of the Object Project to perform with his fantastic inventions for one night only. See his animatronic artwork in action and his performance inspired by the York floods where he battles against flowing water to paint a watercolour portrait.

Meanwhile down in the Black Swan, our underground venue, get into the party mood with the very popular five-piece Latin band Bellavana and catch a film screening from Young Women’s Film Academy. The Black Swan Venue Bar will be open in support of the other Late Shows events at Newcastle Arts Centre and the Assembly House. You can get acquainted with The Craftshop and Details Art Materials, before venturing around our bustling courtyard and studios and enjoy street food by North East Beef.

Free admission 7pm-11pm, accompanied children welcome, most performances from 8pm to 10pm.
Wheelchair access to the ground floor and courtyard. Limited access to the basement.

At the same time, in our other building…

THE ASSEMBLY HOUSE, 55 WESTGATE ROAD

A grand setting for the Newcastle College University Centre BA (Hons) Fine Art degree show.

The exhibition will include a range of traditional and contemporary approaches to painting, sculpture, photography, and film and you’ll be able to meet students and tutors to gain an insight into the artwork on display through student-led workshops.

First, second, and third year students will be exhibiting their work, representing the course collective at various stages in their artistic development. The exhibition will mark the culmination of the final year students’ studies before they embark upon a career in the arts.

No wheelchair access.
