About exhibition:

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is a book I revisit time and time again, and which forms the central theme of my latest exhibition, Interior, a collection of paintings and drawings I created during the lockdown periods of 2020 and 2021.

The story told is of a woman driven to madness shortly after giving birth to her child. Isolated and confined in a room, she begins to see women within the sinister patterns of the garish yellow wallpaper.

Long considered as a projection of the female subject as being ‘kept’ and controlled, I was keen to explore this idea myself with series of ‘Wallpaper Portraits’ and my paintings of interiors, taken from photos and sketches I made on previous visits to Beamish and heritage properties within Northumberland and Newcastle Upon Tyne.

In the home I am a self- confessed maximalist and hoarder, I adore the aesthetic of excess, and fill my home with as much colour, pattern and creativity as possible; which often leads to an overwhelming feeling that I am in fact building my own gilded cage. This is a theme I have traced within my works, of the domestic realm, of entrapment, and comfort, romance and obsession, where doorways, windows, curtains and wallpapers are all suggestions of an unsettling and macabre reality.” – Gina Brown
