I am Somebody
by Mark Carr.
26th August – 10th September

You are invited to view ‘I am Somebody’, a new free exhibition of Photo-Images, Woodcut Prints & Video, created by local artist Mark Carr. On display now at the Assembly House, 55 Westgate Rd, Newcastle.

“From November 2017 to January 2020, I was a volunteer at the People’s Kitchen in Newcastle. The People’s Kitchen provides free meals and many other services for people who find themselves on the margins of society. It is a completely voluntary run organisation, and there is no charge for their services. Every Tuesday I worked as part of a cooking team that prepared 120 meals for the ‘Friends’ who access the services. Towards the end of 2019, I felt compelled to produce a series of work about the ‘Friends’. In consultation with the trustees of the People’s Kitchen and the ‘Friends’ committee, I arranged to take informal photographs of any of the ‘Friends’ that wished to be a part of the project. 31 friends allowed me to take their photograph. From these photographs emerged the large body of work that documents and celebrates these people. The work consists of: 31 life-size woodcut print portraits, an 18-minute video, 31 inkjet multi-photo eye-slit images varnished onto canvas.” – Mark Carr, artist.
