Tour and Talk: ‘From Mansion House to Art House’
Assembly House, 55 Westgate Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear, NE1 1SG
Join us for a tour and discussion of a very special grand country house in the City, which appears dull from Westgate Road but is quite different from a hidden courtyard and has a surprising interior.
Visit 55 Westgate Road and discover the history of the city’s oldest arts building that stands on the line of Hadrian’s Wall which was built as the boundary of the Roman Empire, it stood within the City Walls that for centuries defended Newcastle as an outpost of the English Monarchy.
As a Mansion House, it was the centre of civic power in the 1680s and became the City’s 1st Assembly House, and later an important home. Featured as ‘Assembly House’ on the ‘Corbridge Map’ of 1723. The celebrated Newcastle composer Charles Avison gave his first public subscription concert here in 1735.
The building now stands as modernised in 1775 with the interior awaiting a full restoration. It is run by Newcastle Arts Centre Trust as an occasional events venue and film set. A project to fully restore this treasure is planned.
