Chinese Independent Film Archive 华语独立影像资料馆 (CIFA) Launch Programme

Date: 25 September – 6 October 2023
Venues: Newcastle University, Newcastle Arts Centre
Funded by the Arts and Humanity Research Council, this event is to launch the Chinese Independent Film Archive (CIFA), located in Newcastle University, which is dedicated to the preservation of and access to Chinese independent film culture. The launch event consists of a large-scale multi-media exhibition involving three Chinese independent filmmakers; a Chinese independent film poster exhibition; a film series of 19 films that will be shown for the first time in the UK (including 8 new films being screened in public for the first time), with post-screening Q&As with 16 filmmakers; a one-day symposium on the exhibition and circulation of Chinese independent cinema; four roundtables; a journal issue launch; and a performance. It involves over 40 invited guests from China, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Norway, Singapore, the Netherlands, UK, and USA, including filmmakers, artists, curators, archivists, critics, and scholars, many of whom have played an important role in the development of Chinese independent cinema.
The launch aims to showcase the outcome of an AHRC-funded research project (2019-2024) about Chinese independent cinema, promote the use of CIFA in teaching and researching China, and engage in the discussion of a range of pressing issues around Chinese independent cinema and film archives. Through two weeks of launch activities, we hope to open a window onto this unique, important, but marginalised film culture, draw the attention of professionals and the general public alike to CIFA, and encourage the use of CIFA’s collections by students and researchers from within and outside Newcastle University.
