This series of mixed media works represents a personal evocation of walks by a Northumbrian river, exploring its varied movement and the diversity of its surroundings terrain. Built up from acrylic paint and sand on hand-made paper, combining paint and collage in different measures, the works emphasise elemental and atmospheric effects of the river and its bordering terrain.
Embedded in many of these works are more literal ‘clues’ to the urban, suburban, and rural environments which flank the river. Alongside responses to the river as a free-flowing natural force are references to other man-made forces which restrict movement and access.
Painter Annette Chevalier trained at Chelsea College of Art and has exhibited both nationally and internationally. Her solo exhibitions include shows in London, Edinburgh, Newcastle and Liverpool. She was a member of the Newcastle Group showing in exhibitions in Australia, Norway, Finland, Russia, Latvia and the USA. Her work has appeared in collaborations with poetry and Jazz performers, and in two major public art commissions: with Mark Todman, 60 hand-painted banners celebrating the Millennium Festival in Tynemouth, and with Angela Baum, 10 banners for “Reflections of a Garden” installed at Broughton House in Gloucester. Annette lives in Tynemouth and has a studio in North Shields. She has received a number of major awards from Northern Arts and the British Council, and her paintings are in both public and private collections.
