’24 Doors of Christmas’ – A Festive Heritage Event at the Assembly House
Tour and Talk: ‘From Mansion House to Art House’
Assembly House, 55 Westgate Road, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear, NE1 1SG
Join us for part of NE1’s festive ’24 Doors of Christmas’ – an advent calendar like no other – and enjoy a tour and discussion of a very special building.
An important part of the City’s heritage, now owned by Newcastle Arts Centre, 55 Westgate Road stands on the line of the Roman wall and was for many years a centre of power and cultural development.
From the street it appears to be a rather dull grey building, but the front is hidden at the back where it stands facing south, looking like a grand 18th century country house. Unrestored and mostly dating from around 1770, the interior is a surprisingly extravagant homage to both the Roman and British empires. It was the home of the Mayor in the 1680s and later became the town’s first Assembly House where Charles Avison gave his first public subscription concert.
Director of Newcastle Arts Centre, Mike Tilley will be your guide.
