12 noon on Saturday 9th March in the Gallery at Newcastle Arts Centre

Jonathan’s Beanery Series can be seen at Newcastle Arts Centre from 6th – 16th March 2024

Newcastle Arts Centre is very excited to host a special unveiling for Jonathan Marshall’s newest work in his epic Beanery Series. This latest piece pays homage to the city’s popular cabaret and drag venue Boulevard, and celebrates its much loved artists. Jonathan’s work is vast, detailed and incredibly compelling, so we’re thrilled to have him at the Arts Centre once again and to host this outstanding work.

Join us on Saturday 9th for our special unveiling with Boulevard’s artists in attendance, and enjoy some refreshments from our cafe. Visitors will also have the chance to see other works from Jonathan’s Beanery Series.

A word from Jonathan…

“Over the last decade or so I have been making a number of large-scale charcoal drawings, some of which I exhibited at the Arts Centre in 2019. My current series of work is titled the Beanery Series, where I have made work in response to Edward Kienholz’s seminal sculpture The Beanery (1965). Kienholz’s work has a homophobic countenance, and it has been my intention to take the figures from this work and reinvent them for an age of equality and inclusivity. In total there will be 9 drawings in the series, and I am close to completing the 7th, which is titled ‘Les Demoiselle de Boulevard’. [For] ‘Les Demoiselle de Boulevard’… I have worked closely with the cabaret venue ‘Boulevard’ in Newcastle where Danni Dee (leading lady), Miss Rory (host and compere) and Betty Legs Diamond (former leading lady), all feature in the drawing.”
