Woodcut Printmaking in Colour (June 15th)

£60.00

With Joanna Bourne

This is a one day course on:
Saturday, June 15th,
10.00 – 16.00

Woodcut is a relief printing technique which became widely used in Europe from the 15th Century onwards.

In this 6 hour woodcut class, you will be shown how to transfer your image to an A5 wooden block and use a variety of gouges to cut away areas, leaving your image in relief for printing! You will learn the proper technique for inking and printing your block by hand.

Tuition will include cutting techniques to achieve a variety of mark-making, correct application of the ink to achieve successful prints, and support in exploring the use of over-printing and stencils for students wishing to experiment!

Printing by hand offers additional creative opportunities as different effects can be achieved by using softer or firmer pressure with your hand or wooden spoon, to add highlights or create textures. You will also have the opportunity to print background colours for your image, creating a small edition to take home.

This type of printing can be carried out without access to a press, so you will learn techniques which will allow you to continue printing at home!

IMPORTANT! Please bring ideas, sketches or printed images to work from! These can be your sketches or photographs, or an image sourced from books, fabrics, or abstract patterns. The block you will be working on will be A5.
