This five-week oil painting course focuses on understanding how a painting is built over time through layers. Participants work from a self-selected photographic reference, spending the first sessions planning and preparing before gradually developing the painting through underpainting, limited colour, and full colour. The emphasis is on process, structure, and confidence. Suitable for beginners and those returning to oil painting.
Course Structure
Week 1 — Image Selection & Surface Preparation
Choosing and studying a photographic reference, planning the image, and preparing the painting surface
Week 2 — Transfer & Underpainting
Transferring the image and establishing a tonal underpainting
Week 3 — Developing Form (Limited Palette)
Building structure, light, and shadow using a restricted colour palette
Week 4 — Developing Colour
Expanding into full colour mixing and colour relationships
Week 5 — Final Adjustments & Reflection
Final refinements, highlights, and group reflection
Learning Goals / Outcomes
By the end of the course, participants will:
- Understand how an oil painting is developed in stages over time
- Gain confidence working from a photographic reference
- Use underpainting and layering to build form and structure
- Mix and control colour with increasing confidence
- Complete a resolved oil painting built through a structured process
