This is a five week course on:
Thursdays, July 16th, 23rd, 30th & August 6th & 13th
10AM – 1PM

This five-week drawing course introduces participants to drawing through careful observation and practical exercises. Inspired by classical drawing, the course focuses on learning how to look closely, use materials confidently, and build drawings step by step. No previous experience is required. The emphasis is on process, enjoyment, and gradual skill-building as an experience.

Course Structure

Week 1 — Materials & Looking Introduction to drawing materials and classical studies

Week 2 — Form & Light (Cast Drawing) Drawing simple forms to understand light, shadow, and volume

Week 3 — Still Life & Texture Drawing everyday objects, focusing on surface and mark-making

Week 4 — Composition Arranging a drawing on the page: scale, balance, and focus

Week 5 — Figure Drawing Gentle, supported life-drawing exercises focusing on proportion and movement

Learning Goals / Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will:

  • Feel more confident using basic drawing materials
  • Understand how to draw from observation
  • Be able to draw simple forms, objects, texture, and the figure
  • Have an awareness of composition and how to organise a drawing
  • Complete finished drawings and a sketchbook of studies

Booking Procedure – What happens next?

What should you bring with you on the day?
Nothing at all! We provide all the materials you need for every course. We do recommend wearing clothing that is easily washed – just in case!

Lunch
Lunch is not provided.

Refreshments
Refreshments are not provided, however we provide water for our attendants.

Where do the art courses take place?
All courses take place in Studio A or Studio B on the Second Floor of our Studio Block. This can be reached through the Black Swan Courtyard (on Westgate Road).

Parking
We recommend parking in the Grainger Town Multi-Storey (NE1 4DP) – 5 Minute walk from Newcastle Arts Centre.
