Back by popular demand, this course will teach you how to draw a variety of animals, exploring characterful representation.
From the likes of Edwin Landseer through to Jeff Koons, representation of animals in art has changed drastically, in both style and media.
Throughout the course you will learn how to produce simple likeness in pencil, soft pastel and charcoal, developing basic observation and drawing skills ensuring an understanding of the basics of animal drawing before embarking upon the complex subject of developing character in animal portraiture.
We will look at animals as a subject in art. How have artists treated the seemingly difficult subject of fur, for example? You will be given ideas about how best to sit your subject and how to photograph an animal for optimal character and likeness in your drawing.
All abilities welcome.

What should you bring with you on the day?
Nothing at all! We provide all the materials you need for every course. We do recommend wearing clothing that is easily washed – just in case!

Refreshments are not provided, however we provide water for our attendants.
Where do the art courses take place?
All courses take place in Studio A or Studio B on the Second Floor of our Studio Block. This can be reached through the Black Swan Courtyard (on Westgate Road).
Parking
We recommend parking in the Grainger Town Multi-Storey (NE1 4DP) – 5 Minute walk from Newcastle Arts Centre.
Cancelling a course booking?
If you are not able to come to a course you have booked just get in touch with us as soon as you can. We will try to arrange a full refund where possible. Need to cancel your booking? You must inform us at least one week before the course’s start date to guarantee a refund.
