Explore and learn all about the wonderful technique of Woodcut with Printmaker Joanna Bourne. 

Examples of Woodcut relief printing dates back to the 5th Century in Chinese art, with the technique becoming widely used in Europe from the 15th Century onwards.

On this 6-hour course, you will create a 2-colour image from two wood blocks using a simple registration technique to align the blocks. You will transfer your image to the first block (your key block) and use a variety of gouges to cut away the wood and create your relief print image. 

You will be shown how to ink up and print your block using a printing press, and be shown how to register your image onto the second block to create the second layer of colour in your print. You will be shown how you can also print by hand, so you can continue working at home!

At the end of the course, you will have printing a small edition of 2-colour woodcuts to take home. You will be working on 15cm x 15cm blocks of wood, so please bring ideas or an image of this size to work from. These can be your sketches or photographs, or an image sourced from books, fabrics, or abstract patterns. This class would suit those with a little experience of woodcut, maybe having attended a previous class and wishing to extend their knowledge!
